STUDIO

This is where the paintings begin.

The studio is not separate from the work. It is part of it—the place where ideas take shape, where colors are tested, where paintings are changed, scraped back, covered, and begun again.

I often work on several paintings at once. They remain around me as I paint, each one becoming part of the conversation. A color, a figure, a gesture, or a feeling can move from one canvas to another. Sometimes a painting tells me where to go next. Sometimes it asks me to start over.

There is paint on the floor, brushes within reach, cans open, canvases on easels, and paintings leaning wherever there is space. Some works are finished. Others are waiting. And there is always an empty canvas somewhere, quietly asking what will happen next.

I like that moment.

The moment before the first mark, when anything is still possible.
